Saturday 24 May saw the first Mont-Blanc area Vélorution’Air bike rally take place in Chamonix. Launched by the Inspire campaign, the rally attracted 300 participants who cycled together from Les Gaillands lake to Chamonix town centre. The aim of this festive gathering was to show the newly-elected mayors that now is the time to develop cycling infrastructures in the area, such as cycling paths. The event was also aimed at enticing people to get back on their bikes, as an environmentally-friendly way of getting around.
With a road closed to traffic, participants were able to cycle safely to the town centre, where a bike repair stand, electric bikes and music awaited them. All cyclists were given a «je suis vélorution’Air» sticker.
This Vélorution’Air rally was a first, but will certainly not be the last! The next one will take place in Les Houches in September 2014 and, for 2015, Inspire is looking for partners to organise a similar rally in Saint Gervais, Passy or Sallanches… «On your bike!».
